This list does not include 3 cassettes that he released prior to any of these works (as far as I know). Anyway, I really enjoy Steve's music. His later style is techno/trance while the earlier releases are quite diverse (electronic, meditative, ambient). My favorite is the Inter Planetary Ambience and the Phänomene Strk. You are sure right, the score you refer to is the Castlevania theme.. and since the themes in a way mix between the game and CD, it's possible TD might have heard this track somewhere. I think TD was the first to sequence the organ sound, and that has a mainstay in the game's music. But it's the perfect soundtrack, I can listen to the short tracks over and over; I'm quite sure the composer was influenced by TD. One track starts with a piano solo which is very acoustic, then a array of synth comes in, with that cool analog sounding brass synth, with flutes, and other wind instruments and organ sounds. Although simplistic and the game itself is from 93, the sound is great. I played a recent Castlevania on a more advanced system, and the music, although good, had switched to a more 90's e-guitar style. Now all I need is to get my brother on Guam to send me the Castlevania music CDs!!! Greg H. From: tadream@c... I remember a friend of mine who asked me if 'Tangerine Dream' was their new album! Someone on the list suggested that they should place Oasis on the 'Oasis' shelves in the Xmas sales, to increase their profits. Not a bad idea. The back side credits say something like, 'photography: _______' (I forget the name) and 'music: Tangerine Dream.' Then there's the copyright notice. There's so little information that someone at Camera One decided to put a small sticker on the back side that says, '45 mins., hi-fi stereo.' That's it. This video is a Camera One release. Specifically, I mean: o Waveform o Waveshape o Wavestar I have never heard anything by Waveform. I just know that they are a German group. I have Waveshape's first album, SIGMA, and I thought it was a cold, barren TD retread which brought to my mind the outcome of if Kraftwerk did a TD homage. (Why do you like this album, Lars?) I only have Wavestar's first album (on vinyl), MOONWIND, but it is really pretty good, overall: sort of like GREEN DESERT meets STRATOSFEAR meets EXIT. Of particular note is the track, 'Cabala,' which I think has one of the best melodies I've ever heard in an e-music composition. So, how about a vote re how folks here would rank these guys, along with, say, Radio Massacre International, Node, Redshift, and Synco (can anyone think of any TD clones/casualties I've left out?) on a 1-to-5 scale? For example, I would vote thusly: VOTE BAND NAME ---- --------- ? Node* 4 Radio Massacre International 5 Red Shift 2 Synco* ? Waveform 2 Waveshape 4 Wavestar* *indicates a band which is -- for better or worse -- now defunct. After skimming thru much of the discussions here recently on the subjects of tape trees and the 'unofficial' live recordings that make these trees up, I thought I'd stick my two cents in the mix. First of all, I agree totally that from the fan's point of view, it is all about the music. I know that the recordings I have made and traded for (purely in theory, of course) have been done for the sheer desire to hear and re-experience a particular show I either attended, or was unable to attend. Such trades usually fuel my desire for more material and, on the rare occasion where I may not have purchased the new release of said artist, I may be convinced to go purchase it after listening to the live version again. So, IMHO, the system works as it is supposed to. Secondly, during the '80s when I was in the music biz, whenever our store had access to purchase such 'unofficial' recordings for resale, we tried to come up with a more palatable name than 'bootlegs'. The term we always used, and I think it really applies to the items being distributed thru the trees, was 'non-commercial releases' or NCRs for short. Just thought I'd throw that one out there for use if you like. Thanks for all the great discussion on this subject. There seems to be a lot of NCR product out there just waiting for us to discover. Who knows, I may even 'discover' a tape or two in my own collection...purely in theory, of course. From: tadream@c... Heck, these things are pretty hard to find, even wholesale. We can't even get them at SC & that's rare when we can't find an anime OST. I was kind of bummed when I got C4 for my PSX. Somehow, I can't quite picture them working the crowd up into a lather, pumping their fists, giving each other high-fives and ooh-ooh-oohing. Unfortunately, when they release the PSX Castelvania CD, a freebe item for preorders in the US was a CD of classic Castlevania toons... I guess the music has quite a following!! There is another SNES Castlevania with some cool toons.. it's the same game as the Turbo Graphix CD Dracula X, but obviously without the CD quality music. I heard as far as the game is concerned, the Sega Genesis Castlevania is the one to get--the music quality though, is much to be desired through the old Z80 chip in the Sega. From: tadream@c... (Larry E Smith) Hi Steven, Best question I've seen in ages (rating of TD clones)! My 1 to 5 ratings (5 being the best): Waveform - never heard them but would like to hear about them. Waveshape - (4) - I like Sigma and Polychrome a lot. Zyklus is fairly good and Wellenformen is ok Wavestar - (5) - Steven, if you like the Moonwind album, the cd contains an additional 30 minutes. An outstanding cd! One of my top ten of all time. The other 3 are good also. Node - (1) - A HUGE disappointment for me. Sorry Node fans. Radio Massacre International (3) - Haven't heard the new one and didn't care for Knutsford, but the first two cds are good. Red Shift - (5) - Can't wait for the second one. Synco - (3) - Sometimes too poppy, sometimes outstanding. Nightcrawlers - (3) - I've only heard Traveling Backwards. Frank Klare - (4) - I'm adding this guy though he was part of Synco. I love some of his solo work. Some songs are long and hypnotic (and outstanding!) and are probably closer to KS, but still similar to TD. Add Traumklang for that matter to this rating. Air Sculpture - (4) - All three cds I have are very good and I'm looking forward to the next one. In the end, it doesn't bother me that these (and other) bands are TD clones (or close to), it only matters how good the music is. I'm curious about other opinions... But > that's > just my opinion, I could be wrong....David Hey! I thought we were comparing 'Tournado' with 'Goblin's Club!' Cars, well, an American car at least, usually all have a smillilar, yet short fate. But then the used 82' 300 TD (Turbo Diesel) Mercedes my father owned had close to 400,000 miles on it's original engine. So my analogy could be wrong too... I just find 'Lamb With Radar Eyes' to be too much of a guitar song with popish drumming and percussion. What I liked about track three off 'Encore' was the almost freeform guitar playing backed by altering sequenceing and a simple tempo beat. The music style has changed to a more 'feeling' composition. 'Firetounges' is in the same way related. But I don't understand how a song such as that can start off with a shroud of darkness and it's first and strained notes of melodies is from a piano or harpsichord. Most of us have all those melodies imprinted in our heads (maybe a bit too much) It just seems odd that they force two very different elements into one track.. certainally you could start off with a subtle ambient opening, begin a mellow sequence of piano or harpsi whatevers.. then build it up into an interesting composition. Decided to hit the bar in the hotel, met this interesting guy who said he worked on the tour. Started talking about taping the show. He says, 'No sweat, I'll take care of you'. Got to the show the next day, and there he was running the board. To make a long story short, he gave me a tape of the entire performance including the soundcheck. He even got me backstage and I met ALL the musical heroes of my youth. I'll never forget that show. Making Waves is just ok. Waveshape (4) - I like Sigma and Live 96/97 best... 80's TD. Wavestar (3) - I don't have Moonwind, but Mind Journey is good... Zenith and Out of Time are ok. Node - (3) - I just got Terminus and it is much better than Node (untitled) which I really don't care for much. Radio Massacre International (3) - I like Republic and Frozen North the best... didn't really care for Organ Harvest or Knutsford in May. Red Shift - (5) - Outstanding debut album!! Nightcrawlers - (4) - Traveling Backwards is very good. Air Sculpture - (4) - They get better with each release. Europa is a classic. Impossible Geometries and Attrition System are both good. Others that I consider to be 70's TD Retro: Foreign Spaces (3) - Dark Star is good, UFO Breakfast and Being Creature are ok. Dweller at the Threshold (4) - No Boundary Condition (only release I think) is excellent vintage 70's TD. Spyra, Jiannis and Otarion are also very good 70's TD Clones. Radio Massacre International (3) - 'Republic' is their best (IMO), the 1st CD of Frozen North and the title track of 'Organ Harvest' are excellent. Even their 'Diabolica' and 'Burned &Frozen' CD-Rs have some great parts, well I´m a sequencer nut ;-) Red Shift - (3) - Only the 1st track is worth to be mentioned, Mark´s just playing with his new toys. His new 'Ether' excerpt is a killer, if the new CD will be as good as that excerpt they´ll get a (4) for sure. Nightcrawlers - (2-3) - Traveling Backwards has its moments... AirSculpture - (4) - AS is surely the best live EM act, Europa was released without any overdubs, editing ! Since they do nothing else than improvisations there´s always the risk of desaster, but if it works, it works bloody superb ! Dweller at the Threshold (2) - No Boundary Condition, well with their equipment u can do it way better. For instance, the 'Mustang', despite its lower power and slightly higher price, is a much better car than the 'Camaro', which is why the Ford car outsells the Chevy by a fair margin. Well, I've had a couple of weeks now to fully digest the aural pleasures contained within the 4 discs that comprise this set and I must say that this ranks as *the definitve* TD rare tracks collection to date! It is unparalleled in both it's content and sound quality! Judging from the track listing, this collection is intended to represent only officialy released (in one format or another) rarities, not including radio or promotional edits ('Dr. Destructo' notwithstanding, apparantly since it is longer than the original track with a unique ending.) This is also literally the best sounding LP/CS-CD transfer I've *ever* heard! Yes, some tracks are still recognizable as coming from vinyl; *but*, knowing the limitations of the software available to perform said transfers, any artifacts still remaining are due to unusual defects in the source material and any attempt to remove or compensate for them would result in significant loss of music data (as many of us know from the now vastly inferior boot collections out there!) It cannot be bettered unless and until Edgar decides to release this material himself, IMNSHO! Now, lest anyone think I'm just here to gush, there are a (very) few quibbles I have with the track selection. First, I'll give you all the pertinent printed info that came with the CD, with all misspellings intact: FRONT COVER: Tangerine Dream Electronic Orgy Close cropped photo of an average-sized breast (covered by an 'In-store play only' promo pastie!;)) BACK COVER: Electronic Orgy The Rare Songs Collection 1971-1995 Featuring music performed by Edgar Froese Christopher Franke Peter Baumann Johannes Schmoelling Paul Haslinger Linda Spa Zlatko Perica Jerone Froese Album Mastering By Digital Domain Released under license by Orbiting Soundbits Gmbh 1977 (R)&(C) O.S. Now, as for the minor quibbles: -Where is 'Hobomarch'? -Where is 'Golgotha and the Circle Closes'? -Where are 'Lana' and 'No Future' from the RBAK? -Where are 'Timesteps' by Chris and 'Galago' by Johannes from KLEM2? -Where is 'Transcendant Smile or Cough' by Paul? -Why include 'Phaedra (live) when it's available on _Tangents_? -*WHY* include Craig Safan's 'Confrontation' in a *TD* collection? I, personally, would have preferred to see all of the above MIA's replace 'Phaedra' and 'Confrontation'. But as I said, this is a very minor quibble. The persons responsible for collecting and producing the material for this project are to be justly praised for an doing an outstanding job! And if word should reach us that they need to make bail, we should all chip in to help! ;) If you've been putting off getting a copy, for whatever reason, I would *strongly* urge you to find one *NOW* before they're all gone! You *WILL NOT* be dissappointed in *ANY* way! From my many and varied sources I have determined that there are likely more copies available than there are people on this list, so finding one should not be too difficult, if you hurry. And the price *most* people are asking is ridiculously low for a collection of this nature! Well, I'm going to try again, since I received the set shortly afterwards. My questions are: 1) There ARE a few tracks on it that aren't really rare, right? Some of the soundtrack stuff is readily available, isn't it? I know most of it IS rare, just checking. 2) What is 'Tatort?' A soundtrack I guess, but never heard of it. Very nice tracks from that, BTW. 3) After 'Unicorn Theme,' from Legend, the insert says WDR - Cologne, 'Schwingungen,' 2/23/89. What does that mean? Is the theme taken from the Ash Ra Tempel album 'Schwingungen?' 4) About the set in general, it seems to be a relatively low budget b**t release, with color Xeroxed tray cards, no booklet (just paper inserts, etc. Not complaining, as the content seems quite good, but just wondering about the origin of the set. Anyone know who put it together? If anyone cares to answer these questions, thanks! How did you find about that Goldtri post since you got tossed from the list!!! (Mike, speaking philosophically since he's in self exile from the same list. Looks like we have mutual snitches forwarding us messages... ;-) ) I agree with Shreeve's sentiments completely. My best TD buys of the 90's have been b**ts of TD stuff from the 70/80's. I usually give a band three consecutive bad releases before I call it quits. With TD, I've relaxed that standard to encompass one pound of useless CDs. I'm getting close to that amount now. I'm hoping that AM will reduce the load a bit, but not much. While I can appreciate that there are many fans who've only discovered TD recently and love the current style, some of us die hard's are horrendously disappointed by the stuff coming out these days. As usual, it's all a matter of personal taste, but I'm on the precipice at this time of being forever consigned to TD's past. Oh yeah, Shreeve. Complaining here is useless. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Really-From: 'Lars R. Jones' <105411.3107@c...> Dreamers Here are 19 proposed live tape trees to be synchronized with the D:LIVE! discussion. The planned tape tree schedule is being posted now for three reasons: 1) To clutter up the list for those of you who are uninterested in live material & tape trees or who are more concerned with off-topic non-td discussions ;-) 2) to encourage participation among listees -- even NEWBIES ARE WELCOME; you do NOT need to have anything to trade; if you do, that's icing on the cake. 3) Your master and lo-gen tapes are hereby solicited for tree use, either for the dates listed below and or for different concerts for which you have lo-gen tapes or have a compelling reason for their inclusion. Your comments will also help the select from the various choices below; appropriate filler material will be included by sources if possible. The first tree should start in about 1-3 weeks... the trees will run about every 2-3 weeks and include 2-3 gigs on about 2-4 tapes; this method will allow easier & faster dissemination & it will save everyone about 50% to 75% on postage (over doing 1 tape/tree). Source & branch-level participants will probably have to make tapes or cdrs for no more than 2-3 people. Priorities for organizing these trees are: 1) the complete concert whenever possible 2) concerts with the best material 3) a broad chronological range of material 4) concerts with better sound quality 5) masters and lo-gen tapes If you can't make up your mind about whether to participate, perhaps you should consider the advice of Joel Goodson: 'Sometimes you just have to say `what the fuck'.' I'm only actually tossed from the list in the sense that friends filter out useless whining on Elana's behalf & forward me informative things. I actually find it pleasurable to not have to listen to her egotripping & I only get info that is useful or interesting. This list is far and away the better of the two. Ah, you must have caught one of the Bruton Library Discs such as 'Power House,' 'Riding The Edge' or 'Energy Fountain,' each containing original music specifically reworked for film or advert. accompaniment. Once you hear Shreeve's live album, 'Collide' or either of his *staples,* 'Legion' or 'Crash Head,' you won't be finding much to compare to Jarre. Jarre's music is great stuff (esp. 'Oxygene 7-13' and 'M.F.'), but it's smooth, rounded, non-abrasive edges would be very sore after an altercation with Mark's hook-laden, buzzsaw-melodics brand of EM. I can even see connections between the songs and the various parts of the 'story'. Not sure whether I prefer the re-mixes of 'Firetongues' and 'Jungle Journey' or the originals.. the originals fit the album better I suppose (what a supprise!). I think this going to be my favorate instrumental *narrative* album for a while (it would normally be Bo Hanson's 'Lord of the Rings' but this isn't on CD :-( ) Cheerio! (HK) Hi, well, here I am a little groggy after listening to Jerome Froese's Radio Show last night / this morning. It started at 1:00 am and I have to confess I bailed out at 4:00am and could not bring myself to stay awake until 5:00, but it is all on tape, my friends... First of all, Jerome promised to have a full tracklist of what he played on the tadream homepage shortly, which is great cause it saves me a lot of work. Just look it up there, ok? He stated that some of the tracks were put together for the show at the last moment, some minutes before the show began... There was practically no talk about TD or Jerome's involvement or anything, no interview etc. Jerome only talked about the music he played and only did some 5 minutes wrapup of current TD projects that are in the pipeline. One small sidenote: He mentioned 'Luminous Visions' and stated that to the disappointment of many fans, there will be practically no new TD material used for the soundtrack, but instead music based on Dream Mixes 1 material. That's all he said...sounds like sort of a remix of DM1. The music will be available on a CD as well as the video... Now about the music. Jerome had layed out his show in 4 parts. Fist hour: various of his favourite tracks of drum'n'bass, jungle and similar styles, and some (non-rare) TD. The 3 TD tracks turned out to be 2 tracks from Timesquare DM 2 and also the 1983 remix 12' of Warsaw In The Sun. My opinion on the other material: Not being too familiar with D'n'B and Jungle etc, I have to say I really enjoyed about half of the stuff and found it awesome music, the other half was so-so and one hardcore track (by 'Allied Force') was *extremely* hard to digest for this D'n'B newbie here. Second hour: Jerome's 50-Minute Nonstop Vinyl Turntable Mix of Drum'n'Bass tunes. Again, I suppose for someone into D'n'B it must have been an awesome trip. For me, I found some very nice segments in it, particulary three appended tracks starting around 25 minutes into the mix were really spaced out, but all in all it it got a bit tedious for me... Third hour: The TD rarities, all concentrated in one hour. As far as I recall (I did get very tired at that time and have to relisten to the tape) it contained some of the following: 1) An unreleased early demo version of one of the tracks on Goblins Club (don't shoot me, you know where to find the tracklisting) recorded direct to ADAT in one session at their Vienna studio. (I found this version much better than the official one since it is less 'overloaded') 2) Brighton 1986 live, 10 minute excerpt containing the guitar part of Ride On The Ray (Awesome version!!!!) 3) Brighton 1986 live, another excerpt, based on music from Legend 4) A track called 'Mandala' (I missed the introduction to where and when this came from) Nice song in the style of the Canyon Dreams material. 5) Unicorn Theme, alternate demo version with Susanne Pawletzki on vocals instead of Jon Anderson. This version was turned down by Universal due to her German accent (yes, I can understand that decision). Is this the one that's on Electronic Orgy??? 6) A long live excerpt of Brussels 1997 live containing 'Maedchen On The Stairs' and 'Thief Yang'). AAARRGHHH....Jerome, why did you play this??? It is not rare at all since it sounds exactly like the CD-singles and like Tournado. Some 10 minutes wasted where you could have played some really rare stuff... 7) A really nice track from 1980 (!) recorded 'live in Dresden's Hygiene Museum'????? Maybe I misunderstood because it was getting close to 4:00 and I had to fight hard to stay awake, anyway it sounded clean as a studio recording and was quite good . Fourth Hour: Jerome annouced he would play stuff similar to the first hour, but more ambient and slower in style. I haven't heard it yet, but sounds like it could be interesting... As for the Logos concert - that remains one of my all time favourite concerts - the lighting ws superb - and the music?? well we all generally agree that the music was unsurpassed. - regardless of whether it came off backing tape or not. At the end of the day, does it really matter whether notes are played live or not mimed?? As long as you enjoy the music, and the atmosphere afforded by a concert situation, and the lighting show is good - I really don't see that it makes a difference - what we want to see is our idols up there in real life - and we get that with TD - and not a half a mile away like in the larger venues.
